What is MTSS?

  • MTSS is an umbrella framework that includes both RTI and PBIS. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered framework primarily for academic support and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework for behavioral support.  MTSS is designed to help schools identify struggling students early and to intervene quickly.  MTSS focuses on the “whole child” and supports academic growth, achievement, behavior, social and emotional needs, and absenteeism.

What is SEL?

  • Social Emotional Learning focuses on supporting the cognitive and emotional needs of students. SEL programs support students on how to apply skills needed to manage their  emotions, setting and achieving positive goals, feeling and demonstrating empathy for others, building and sustaining positive relationships, and engaging in responsible decision making.

What is PBIS?

  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) seeks to reduce or eliminate poor behavior school wide through the encouragement of positive behaviors.  Our Werner Stars created a special skit on how we use PBIS at our school.

  • Inclusive Classrooms

Before COVID-19, a strong effort was being made by our MTSS team to reinvent what the school daily experience can be like for students outside of the four walls. The goal was to create 5 inclusive environments  that not only nurtured student creativity and imagination, but spaces that allowed students to learn and appreciate each for their unique talents and assets. The 5 areas included Mindful Movement Space, a Werner Exploration Room, A  “Can do” Carbon Forest, a Growth Mindset Garden, and finally, several Mindful Meditation Walkways. All areas are devoted to helping students reach their fullest potential academically, awareness and regulation of social emotional skills and behavior options.

  • Outdoor Classroom

Outdoor programs also give youngsters lessons in how to be ecologically conscious stewards of the environment. As a member of the Rialto STEM CARES program, Werner Stars will have the many necessary skills to contribute to saving ourselves and our environment.

  • Mindful Movement Space

The Mindful Movement Sensory Center was a collaboration between the Rialto Special Education department and Werner Elementary. This special space includes several sensory activities and play stations. The goal continues to highlight inclusion opportunities for all students. Stars learn gain access to appropriate sensory stimulation and their bodies learn how to respond appropriately to the stimulation, they enhance learning through occupational therapy (OT) or adult-directed play, which engages different areas of the brain, leading to improved information retention, helps children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills and by providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus.

  • A ¨Can do¨ Carbon Forest

Werner stars deserve fresh air and time to appreciate the environment around them. Our outdoor class will provide time in nature, experiential learning and physical activity outdoors. Research has demonstrated that students can be stewards of the environment and ecologically conscious. Some other benefits include compassion toward plants and animals, the importance of picking up litter and how to garden, and strengthening a child’s foundation for literacy. Studies indicate that playing and relaxing in natural settings can defuse stress. Brief nature walks can reduce anxiety, distraction, and symptoms of ADHD. And when schools take kids outside to learn, kids have become more motivated and self-directed.

  • Growth Mindset Garden

Our Growth Mindset Garden Grove and our “Can Do” Carbon Forest were created to spark an interest in hands on science, healthy habits with nutrition, and environmental literacy. Students will learn how to harvest their own organic food as well as the benefits of clean air, ecosystems and energy. The garden will teach students the basics of gardening and the benefits of eating produce grown by students. Our small Carbon forest will sequester carbon by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and transforming it into biomass through photosynthesis. Sequestered carbon is then accumulated in the form of biomass, deadwood, litter and in forest soils. Forests and their role in the carbon cycle are affected by changing climatic conditions.

  • Mindful Meditation Walkways

Mindful Meditation Walkways will be created to provide themed pathways to various locations on the campus. The pathways will encourage students to hop, skip, jump and walk to their destinations while learning and engaging them. They will promote literacy and self regulation through their quotes, fonts and themes.

  • Werner Exploration Room

The Werner Exploration Creator Room was designed for stars to explore with their imagination, problem based focus and hands on learning often referred to as Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge. Werner’s Exploration room is different from a regular PBL classroom because it also has a virtual reality lab. Students are able to construct their own models using tools, computer software and a 3-D printer.
